This is an ‘RCBO’, a ‘residual current breaker with overload protection’, fundamentally is an electrical ‘fault’ protection device.
An RCBO is a hybrid protection device having the protective functions of a Miniature Circuit Breaker (‘MCB’) and a Residual Current Device (‘RCD’).
I’ve travelled this morning, to collect this RCBO since I have a ‘final’ test to undertake when investigating the compatibility of a modified sine wave inverter with a portable ventilator. I have written of this matter before, concerning a fatality within an ambulance due to failure of the ventilator.
It has taken some time to draw conclusions of compatibility, but it so happens that within the electrical circuit of the inverter and ventilator, connected between the output of the inverter and input of the ventilator was an RCBO.
An RCBO and for that matter a RCD, function by monitoring the electrical current drawn from an electrical energy source and that returned to the source. In the normal case the drawn and return components, in magnitude, should be the same. However if they differ, the device detects the abnormality and operates, …’trips’.
So given the modified sine wave electrical energy source, a poor representation of a standard sine wave, it could be that on the day of the fatality, the RCBO had tripped, hence the need for investigation.
