What is this? 

This is a ‘Thomson mirror galvanometer’ used practically in the laying of transatlantic electrical cables. The galvanometer takes its name from ‘Sir William Thomson’, later to be Lord Kelvin, ‘Kelvin’ chosen and taken from the name of a stream that flows near the University of Glasgow, where Thompson had been Professor of Natural Philosophy for nearly 50 years.
In 1857, an attempt to lay a transatlantic cable failed so Thomson set out with the cable-laying expedition in the summer of 1858, and after several false starts, the first Atlantic cable was successfully completed from Ireland to Newfoundland on 5 August 1858. The cable was hailed as the great triumph of the age, the annihilator of distance, the guarantor of universal peace and understanding.
But the 1858 cable never worked quite right. During laying, the operators had signalled through it quite well using Thomson’s mirror galvanometer, but once the ends were landed and handed over to Whitehouse in Valentia, Ireland, and to his assistants in Newfoundland, they had great difficulty getting their heavy apparatus to work through it.

Robert is an accomplished professional Electrical Expert Witness having prepared and presented many court compliant reports and presented oral evidence within the High Court, Crown Courts, Magistrates and County Courts.

Robert is a registered Chartered Electrical Engineer, specialising in the fields of control engineering, parameter data capture and accurate data ‘representation’. Robert graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a first-class honours degree in Electronic Systems and Control Engineering and followed this by completing doctorate research in Electrical Engineering, again at Sheffield Hallam University where Robert undertook research studies in the field of Disintegration and Arcing in Electrical Fuses. Robert is now considered to be a leading world expert in the field of electrical circuit protection systems, the phenomena of electrical fuse operation and the attributes of clearing ‘fault’ electrical current circumstances. Robert has published pure and applied research studies in peer-refereed journals and at conference. Robert has appeared several times on national television presenting expert opinion in consumer affairs related stories.

In his spare time Robert is a motorsports enthusiast, audiophile, and enjoys outdoor pursuits. Robert is a brass band enthusiast, a tuba player and band manager of Hatfield and Askern Colliery Band. When time allows Robert also enjoys travelling and reading any books associated with travel and popular science.
